About IIT Guwahati

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI (IITG), the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The Institute has eleven Departments and five inter-disciplinary Academic Centres covering all the major engineering, science and humanities disciplines and offers B.Tech, B.Des, MA, M.Des, M.Tech, M.Sc and PhD programmes.

Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up world class infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and is now equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering facilities. It is one of the most dynamic institutions in India, with one of the most beautiful educational campuses in the country on a sprawling 285 hectares of land on the north bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on other side.

IIT Guwahati is now actively engaged in increasing its global footprint. Over the past two decades, IITG has played a pioneering role in multiple areas. This has now led to IIT Guwahati standing neck-to-neck with the top institutes in achievements. Our national and international ranking has in recent years seen a remarkable improvement and we now seek to be recognized amongst the top 20 Young Institutions worldwide. The institute is fully residential for the students, enriched with world-class facilities, and empowered with a young, dynamic faculty and staff.

Guwahati is the largest city of Assam in India and ancient urban area in North East India. It is also the largest metropolitan area in north-eastern India. It is said to be the "Gateway" of the North East Region. History says that Guwahati is one of the ancient cities of Asia.
